The term "going steady" was the popular term in the 1950s to refer to a couple who was dating exclusively. In the 50s, dating around (without a sexual relationship) was common. It was normal for a teenage girl to have a date with one boy one weekend, and a different boy the next weekend. When a relationship achieved an exclusive status, it was termed "going steady."
There have been many terms over the years that describe the same thing. It seems to depend on not only the generation, but on the age of the couple, as well as the area in which they live.
Other terms that are used to describe going steady:
- Dating
- Hanging out
- Going out
- Going together
- Seeing each other
