Why has control of jersualem been a source of deep hostikity between jwes and Muslims?

Recently speaking, each group purports injustices done to its community when "the other guys" are in charge.

Jewish grievances from when the city of Jerusalem was under Jordanian occupation:

1) The Western Wall, the holiest site in Judaism, was used as a trash dump and completely neglected by Jordanian authorities.

2) Jews were forbidden from praying in the Old City and from entering Jordan at all if they had Israeli citizenship. All Jews in the Old City were forcibly removed during the Arab-Israeli War of 1948-9.

3) Jordan did not assure the safety of the Israeli military transit to Mt. Scopus (this was part of the Armistice Agreement in 1949).

4) Jordan dug up and removed Jewish burial grounds outside of the Old City in order to build highways (which could have easily gone around the graves) and physically rewrite history. (This is aside from the fact that uprooting the dead is an incredible sign of disrespect.)

5) Jordanian snipers patrolled the Old City Walls on Israel's border.

Arab/Muslim grievances since Jerusalem has been united under Israeli occupation:

1) The imposition of limits and checkpoints concerning access to Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock, in addition to the other issues with checkpoints.

2) The continued eviction and forced removal of Palestinians in East Jerusalem subject to a flawed Israeli Building Regulations committee.

3) The construction of Israeli Settlements such as Pisgat Zeev and Maale Adumim on the outskirts of East Jerusalem, making the possibility of the city as a Palestinian capital dubious.

4) Non-Muslims can visit Muslim holy sites. (The non-Muslims cannot pray there in a way offensive to Muslims, such as promoting Christ or denying Mohammed, but Muslims would prefer that their holy sites be off-limits to non-Muslims.)

5) Israeli unequal treatment of maintaining West and East Jerusalem. (This is general, such as schools, Plumbing, police forces, firemen etc.)
