Should you put flowers on a gravestone if the person is still alive?

If they are still alive wouldn't be better to give them the flowers? Flowers are placed at grave sites as a token of remembrance of one who has passed on. It serves no useful purpose to do so before hand and the gesture might be taken as a threat or an insult.
