Why is it a good fire precaution to close doors at night?

Because closing doors can slow down the smoke and fire, giving occupants more time to react to a smoke alarm or other fire alarm. If doors are open, the hot smoke and gases can spread by convection and radiation faster than by conduction of heat through the door or wall.
