The US became independent from Great Britain during the Revolutionary War (1775-1783). While still colonies, they fought with Britain against France (French and Indian War). Once independent, the US fought a naval war with revolutionary France (1800) but later was considered an ally by Napoleon, who sold Louisiana (1803).
Although attempting to trade with both sides, the US did not take an active role in the Napoleonic Wars, but later indirectly benefited from them, when fighting the War of 1812 against Britain.
