On the Greek side, the 5th Century BCE historian Thucydides postulated that, with 120,000 to feed, half the force had to be farming on the Gallipoli Peninsula on the other side of the Dardanelles strait to keep up a food supply after they had looted everything available on the Asia Minor coast and islands.
