Most times this is deposit on the hair shaft. A fairly simple remedy is this recipe.

One ounce of shampoo, one ounce of 3% hydrogen peroxide.

Mix together and shampoo hair gently. Let suds sit in hair for about five minutes and rinse very thoroughly. Be careful not to get mixture into eyes or on clothing. Condition as usual.

The lower volume of peroxide will "strip" any residue from the hair without changing the hair color much. There might be a very slight fading although this will be negligable. Change your shampoo brand about every three to four months; this will help prevent shampoo build up.

Another option is to use a "blue" based temporary rinse. Roux's fanciful rinse "White Minx" is a good one. Just apply after shampooing and let it dry in. This will make the discoloration less noticeable, as yellow and blue counteract each other in hair color.

Check your diet. High concentrations of sulfur based foods and drugs can have this effect. Usually it is temporary, and will change if your diet changes.
