Why do people in the US reduce their use of coal?

Coal is a type of fuel which produces a lot of pollution, both in terms of carbon dioxide, which contributes to global warming, and nitrogen and sulfur oxides, which contribute to acid rain. Various other impurities in coal produce other, lesser forms of pollution.
