Well, think any Christian Saint, or a martyr for civil rights (like Martin Luther King). You could try the 6 million Jews who died in the Holocaust, or how about a controversial figure like John Brown (the man in the Antebellum who attacked Harper's Ferry, VA in the name of emancipation. A good cause, but wrong approach. He was of course hung.
