What is with the popularity of the SNL cowbell?

Frankly its just funny. Christopher Walken states "we need more cowbell" in his classic, dull tone during the SNL skit. But its all so silly, just realizing that this Rock and Roll band, Blue Oyster Cult even used cowbells in their music.
