What is the most cheap way to get from Trieste to Rome?

There are flights between Trieste Airport and Rome's airports with Alitalia but these can be very expensive (from €99 upwards). There are also several trains a day direct from Trieste to Rome but these take around 8 hours and the cost is €60 upwards.
