During the last ice age, known as the Last Glacial Maximum, which occurred around 20,000 years ago, extensive ice sheets covered large areas of North America, Europe, and Asia. In North America, the Laurentide Ice Sheet extended over much of Canada and the northern United States. In Europe, the Scandinavian Ice Sheet covered parts of Scandinavia and the British Isles. Additionally, smaller glaciers were present in mountainous regions around the world.
