When constructing a sentence what does it mean when it says parallel form?

Parallel form is when two parts of a compound sentence use the same basic Word structure. For example:

I went to the store; I bought milk.

This is a compound sentence - note the use of the semicolon indicating two separate and complete statements. Both use a simple structure: first person subject, past-tense verb, simple object of the verb.
