Cayenne in chicken feed does not promote extra laying of eggs. This "old wives tale" has been studied over and over yet persists today as a rural "urban" legend. Studies are still ongoing about the use of capsaicin (the hot ingredient in peppers) as a salmonella preventative. Poultry is not affected by the oils of the pepper plant and while peppers are nutritious for the birds, many studies have proven the rate of lay is not effected at all by this addition to their food.
