It sounds like you are asking if the steering wheel will suddenly stop working while you are driving and the car careen off into a canyon or river or something. The answer to that is: probably not. Very unlikely actually. But there are a lot of things that can cause this "popping" noise, because steering is complicated and involves a lot of moving parts. One of those parts is worn to the point it is causing an issue, and this issue will only get worse. Take if you can look underneath and inspect all of the parts of the front suspension and steering you may see visible wear or a loose part that needs to be fixed. You should take it to a mechanic and get it looked at sooner rather than later though, even if the car still works it could get worse (and more expensive to fix) if you leave it.
