Did hernan Cortes explore California

Hernando Cortes explored California because he was looking for the next Aztec Empire. He wanted the same glory he received from finding that brilliant empire again. Many Spanish explorers after did the same thing, in North America only to fail. They wanted glory, and they wanted wealth. Very few were there for missionary purpose.
