Certainly there is some relationship.

But, it's unlikely any action will be taken on a return filed at any time until mid February, when the IRS starts getting the info from reporting Cos, (who actually have until end of Feb to get many in). The IRS really doesn't go into full processing mode until then....and logically has a backlog at first and works through it while gearing up for the later influx.

Using an electronic filing system, and direct deposit to an account of the refund, substantially speeds up the whole thing in any situation. (Check issuance takes weeks more than electronic transfer, and electronic return filing speeds processing a whole lot....especially as a small percent of returns filed electronically have math or format errors , whereas still about 20% of hard copy ones due...and any of those problems delays things by many weeks).
