Alfred Wegener proposed the theory of continental drift based on the observation that the continents appear to fit together like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, particularly the Coastlines of South America and Africa. He also noted similar geological formations, fossil evidence, and climate patterns across continents that are now widely separated. These observations suggested that continents were once joined and have since drifted apart over geological time.
