What is the meaning of bright ring painted round the head of a saint?

The ring is symbolic of the saint's purity or the goodness of their soul. The soul is supposed to shine with the love and devotion they have for God and Christ.

It probably originated with the crown of thorns but became light....

they also follow christ the "light".
