Yes, you sure can put saddlebags on a 1982 Yamaha Maxim. I have the XJ550 model and it usually has the bags on. Standard leather bags simply toss over the seat and secure with the rawhide lacings onboard...usually 4 up top, 2 lower on the sides and/or 2 from the bottoms. Before I had my leather bags, I got 2 cheap backpacks from my local Goodwill and used the straps to make an over the top harness of sorts. then I used the strapping metal to make a light frame, which kept them out of the wheels and chain. These bags I installed under the seat and used bungie cords with yet another backpack on top of the seat. This was more than enough luggage for a 2 week Sturgis/mid-west adventure and has served me well more than once Christmas shopping!
