They do to a degree. In actuality, narcissists have very little, if any, genuine self-knowledge and spend an enormous amount of emotional energy on creating the perfect image behind which to hide. It's a lot of work to live in complete denial of reality and they expect adulation for it.

AnswerFrom my own experience in dealing with my N-sister, I have come to theorize that the first person she lies to is herself.

Imagine a group of facts going through Creative in the marketing department of a business. Once the final product is in the form of a fairly plausible story, one which the author can even believe herself, she can then pitch it to others with conviction, and a sense of justification.

I really don't know with any certainty, but that's how I've made any sense out of it.
