In what conditions does gritting not work in?

Gritting is less effective in heavy rain, as water can wash away the grit before it can bond with the ice or snow. It also struggles in extremely low temperatures, where grit may not provide sufficient traction on hard-packed ice. Additionally, if the surface is too wet or if a layer of ice is already present, the grit may not adhere properly, reducing its effectiveness. Finally, during high winds, grit can be blown away from the treated surface, limiting its impact.
