What are the Indian beliefs on boys wearing earrings?

If you were to look at some Indian/Hindu depictions of their Gods you would realize that all their male Gods are wearing earrings. The information I have seen in Hindu religious scriptures indicate that it is a tradition for boys to have ritual shaving of the head and piercing of the ears at the start of their formal educational process.
