Answer
It is possible for this to happen, though not likely. The likelihood increases if you have a disorder such as ADD or ADHD, or if you have emotional disorders which would interfere with your dream state (eg. PTSD). Almost everybody has hurt themselves in their sleep, simply by laying in a usually uncomfortable position. At the same time, I believe that you are referring to an impact injury. I had never heard of a person hitting themselves in their sleep, but many people have been known to harm others throughout their nightmares. Because of this, I could only say that this is a possible cause of injury, though very unlikely. It is possible to hurt yourself, I know as I have done it on a few occasion's I do not like Spiders and dreamed some years ago my bed, full of spiders. I jumped out while screaming, my mum came down to see what was wrong, I told her and she said there are no spiders get back to bed. In the morning I woke up I had a huge bruise on my hip and my arm, I did not know how I got these, and my mum and sister told me of my dream, my sister said you flew out of bed screaming trying to get away from spiders, smacked into dresser and door hard. My other memorable dream, a truck driver wanted to take a short cut thru my bed room, I said ok, but when he drove the truck thru the wheel was as big as the door, he was going to hit me, I had to jump out of the way, I lept up so my husband told me hit the brick wall, he thought I was dead, I didn't wake up till the morning. My nose had bled, my forehead was scratched and bled, my knees scratched and I was a bit sore all over, I asked my husband what happened and he told me, you jumped up on the bed screamed and lept into the wall, when I remembered why, and told him he burst out laughing and said I was a psycho. So yes you can hurt yourself.
