As of my last knowledge update in October 2023, Pompeii is primarily an archaeological site and a popular tourist destination, with a small population of around 25,000 residents. The town itself is situated near the ruins of the ancient city, which was buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Most visitors come to explore the preserved remains of the ancient city rather than the modern town itself.
