MeiOSis requires two cell divisions because it is a process that produces gametes (sex cells) with half the number of chromosomes as the parent cell. The first division separates homologous chromosomes, and the second division separates sister chromatids. This results in four haploid cells. In contrast, mitosis only requires one division to produce two identical diploid cells for growth, repair, and asexual reproduction.
