Only some employers require three letters of reference from applicants. They believe that this can document an appropriate work history. Letters from people who will sign their name to a recommendation for employment carry a lot more weight than a list of names and phone numbers of former employees or business associations. The prospective employer may be looking for experience/competence in the specific area; dependability; honesty/integrity; growth/development in skills and knowledge.

Sources can be:

  • current or former employer(s);
  • people with whom you have done business regularly;
  • agencies or group for whom you have done volunteer work;
  • people who have known you and your conduct over a period of time.
