In Greek mythology Aphrodite was born in the Aegean sea, which is at the east end of the Mediterranean; she floated ashore on the small island of Cythera, which lies in the sea between mainland Greece and Crete. Cyprus also claimed her birth. So Greek poets called her Cytherea, the "Lady of Cytherea" or Cypria, the "Lady of Cyprus".
