After the firing pin strikes the primer, the primer ignites the gunpowder within the cartridge. This combustion rapidly produces gas, which creates high pressure that forces the bullet down the barrel. As the bullet travels, it is stabilized by the rifling in the barrel, and it exits at high velocity. Finally, the bullet travels toward the target, while the spent casing is ejected from the chamber in preparation for the next round.
