The short answer may be civilization. These guys from about 4 000 BCE, created writing in a syllable mode, pottery, metal working, organized labour, irrigation and many others.
One of their misadventures; repeated by the Romans; was to discover that irrigation leads to salination of the land, such that wheat will no longer flourish. Barley can tolerate a higher degree of salination, but more irrigation will increase salination to overwhelm barley as well.
