In addition to writing over 60 different songs and having many hits, ray Charles was a role model for blind people, showing that having this disability did not mean one could not have a successful career. Also, at a time when black music was sometimes restricted from white top-40 stations, Charles was a "cross-over" artist. His music crossed over from the black (then called "Soul") charts to gain popularity with the white audience.
