How do you fix loose play in a 5 speed shifter on a 1987 ford ranger?

There is a Teflon ball at the end of the shift lever ... these tend to corrode. replace this and you should be fine ... i'd suggest getting the new ball before you take it apart to look at it as the old ball will likely crumble.
