The French Leader who sold the Louisiana Territory to the United States for what was worth $15 million dollars (60 million francs) at the time was Napoleon Bonaparte. He originally had envisioned the Mississippi Valley for food and as a trade center to Hispaniola. His dreams were dashed as he lost 60,000 soldiers to yellow fever during the quashing of an Haitian uprising.
