Though the low internal resistance and high energy-to-weight ratiOS are advantages that make lead acid batteries favorable in automobiles, there are also numerous disadvantages. The main ones include sulfation, risk of exploding under certain conditions, and environmental issues. Sulfation occurs when the battery is old or stays discharged for long enough. The negative cathode becomes coated with a layer of sulfur which reduces the effectiveness of the battery, often preventing it from holding charges and supplying the power needed. This is one of the main causes of car batteries needing to be replaced.

Gasses build up inside of the battery as some of the water in the battery is electrolyzed. In the event that the vents are blocked, a single spark can cause the battery to burst and possibly cause injury. This is quite rare because the water is mainly electrolyzed when the battery is overcharged. Lead acid batteries also contain lead which is known to cause reproductive harm, brain damage, and other environmental problems. Leaking batteries or batteries that have not been properly disposed of are a serious risk because lead dust can be inhaled and cause damage especially to children who are still developing.

As long as the battery is well maintained and disposed of properly, the benefits of this strong and cheap battery outweigh the disadvantages.
