How can you tell if a slug is dead or asleep?

we had 4 slugs in our garden to day i wanted to no if they were dead or not because they were dry and not moving but my nan said they sleep in the morning and wake at night in the dark but i thought they were dead so i want to no HOW DO U NO IF A SLUG IS DEAD!
