How were Civil War pictures taken?

Civil War pictures were taken by photographers who actually witnessed the war first hand. They carried their own camera equipment with them, and also the items needed to construct a portable darkroom to in which they developed their own pictures. The process they used to develope pictures was called wet-plate Photography.
