Why can a cockroach last a month without eating?

Many insects can actually last much longer than that without eating. For example, the common bed bug can go nearly a year without eating. They can do this because their metabolism slows when faced with periods without food and they are able to draw off of the large stores of fat in their body to sustain them until they come across a food source once again.
