The muscles responsible for moving the eyes laterally are the lateral rectus muscles. Each eye has one lateral rectus muscle, which is innervated by the abducens nerve (cranial nerve VI). When the lateral rectus contracts, it pulls the eye outward, away from the midline of the body. This movement allows for horizontal eye movement, enabling better peripheral vision and tracking of objects.
