Can a text message be traced?

Yes. Every text message has a travel path and i.p. attached to the text message. For example if you were to send a text to an e-mail address you can obtain the i.p. of the text in the e-mail headers and then use a website like iplookup.com or a whois.com website to try and determine the location or service provider of the sender.
