The best workaround is one of the simplest, it contains 2 steps
1) Get to the screen telling you that K9 is not responding. If you are an administrator, just find the service and stop it. If you're not, just mess around with the installation until it shows you this screen (the registry might be a good place to go, otherwise just delete some files from C:\Program Files\Blue Coat K9 Web Protection).
2) Navigate to a HTTPS site of your choice. https://facebook.com , https://www.YouTube.com/ or https://www.google.com might be good places to start. If the site you want to go on doesn't support https, simply use a https proxy (google it). If it tells you that K9 is not responding you've probably gone to a normal http site. It will ONLY work with HTTPS sites.
Tested on Windows 7 (x64) running K9 web protection 4.2.89 on 02/05/2011
All the above do not work. Go to control panel on the start menu. In Control Panel, click device manager. Once you are in device manager, look at the top of the window( device manager) and go find view. Under view, look for hidden devices. On the list, find the Words- Non plug and play drivers. Click on it. Once you are in, find the file bckd and click on it. Then find the tab driver, then find the Word called System and change it to Disabled. Now restart the computer. Once you are logged in again, a message will appear- Blue Coat k9 web protection is corrupted, please reinstall or something like that. That means you are free to browse without the firewall. To enable k9 again, do the same process except this time, change the type back to System. There you go. Browse wiselyXD.
