The Pirate Bay is a BitTorrent tracker that provides torrents for people to share and download TV shows, movies, music, applications, and games across the internet.
A few things to understand:
1. A "torrent" is not the file you're trying to download. It's simply a request for the file. You download the torrent first, open the torrent, and begin download of the file (which is often much, much larger than the torrent itself).

Linux
3. Downloading a TV show, movie, album, application, or game that you do not already legally own is copyright infringement. It is illegal to violate copyright law in the United States. Any download you start is your own responsibility, and you should make yourself aware of the laws in your state or country regarding copyright law. It is legal to download BitTorrent clients for legal purposes. The technology is not illegal, but improper use that violate copyright law is.
For example, if I own a DVD copy of "Pirates of the Caribbean", I am legally allowed to download that film to my computer or make a copy of that DVD, since I have legally obtained a copy of that film. If I do not own a DVD copy, or if I did not pay for my copy, I am not allowed to download that movie to my computer or make a copy of that DVD. This distinction is extremely important, as illegal downloading of copyrighted material is a federal offense.
Another example is what's called "Open Source Software", such as Firefox or the Linux operating system. The designers and programmers of these programs allow people to download, change, and share this software through programs like BitTorrent without cost or legal problems. The recipient or distributor of the software can't try to take credit for the program's source code, or attempt to make money from the program (depending on the Open Source License from the original programmers).
