Why would the top on your piston chip off?

Most likely from stress.

Over time the metal weakens from repetative expansion and shrinkage from heating and cooling, not to mention being involved 100's of violent explosions every minute.

It's possible the piston could have come in contact with an intake or exhaust valve too.
