Which pavement markings indicate that it is legal to pass or that it is illegal to pass?

On a two-lane road, a solid line on your side of the road indicates that you are not allowed to pass. If the line on your side of the road is dashed, you are free to pass as long as you do not have to exceed the speed limit to do so. Sometimes the oncoming traffic will have a solid line on their side while your side will have a dashed one. You are allowed to pass in this situation.

Double lines down the center of the road, means no overtaking in most countries.
