Curley's wife is lonely and seeks companionship, which is the major theme of this novella. She realizes that she can talk to Lennie because he is incapable of recalling information and, therefore, will not tell her secrets, which she is desperate to expose.
When Lennie mentions that he likes touching soft things, she allows him to pet her hair. This excites Lennie, and she soon no longer welcomes his touch. However, Lennie is frightened easily and clamps his powerful hands around a lock of her hair when she yells at him to let go. In a state of panic, Lennie , begins shaking her violently, telling her not to scream. Ultimately, the shaking causes her neck to snap, and she dies there in the barn.
