Instrument used to measure the diameter of earth?

The diameter of the earth may me measured by telescopes on opposite sides of the Earth, at the time of an observable phenomena, such as the transit of (say) Venus across the Sun's disk.

This was an important aim of James Cook's voyage to the South Pacific in the 18th century.
