Why do dogs pee in the same spot?

A well house-trained dog will spend more time finding the right place because he has some concept of there being right and wrong places. He has a reward history of going in just the right place. Sometimes it's less about the perfect place as it is about having to think about it for a while, especially when the issue is pooping. A person gets to mull over and decide issues of what to have for breakfast, what to read or watch on TV, and what to wear for the day. For dogs, often the only choosing they get to make on their own in a day is where to sleep or pee. Sometimes it's a shy bladder caused by being used to always going in the same place and suddenly finding themselves away from that familiar place and at a loss for where to go. Sometimes it's about communication, especially for males. Dogs secrete pheromones and other chemicals in their urine that announce to other dogs important information about the urine depositor. Details include the animals age, gender, reproductive status, health, size, and specific identity. Dogs sniff to "read" the messages left by other dogs, and reply with their own urine résumés.
