Was Nellie Bly influenced by a book?

I just finished Nellie Bly's biography. It was more inspired than influenced. You see, she wanted to beat the record in the book and it didn't really change her as a person. Influenced means to control or make someone want to be like you, if it was influence it would have to be more direct.
