How do you make a tomboy stitch?

A tomboy stitch is also known by other names: French knitting, i-cord, or tomboy stitch.

You can make your own "french knitting" machine, by using Popsicle sticks (as is done in one of the attached links), and I have seen knitting machines to make i-cords, which is another name for tomboy stitch.

I have also found another type of cord--a Lucet cord, which is more of a squared cord, rather than a round cord. Attached is a link to a YouTube video for making a Lucet cord.
