Bruno Gaido died on the USS Indianapolis, a Portland-class heavy cruiser of the United States Navy, during World War II. The ship was famously sunk by a Japanese submarine in July 1945 after delivering components for the atomic bomb to the Pacific island of Tinian. Gaido was one of the few survivors of the sinking, enduring a harrowing experience in the water before his eventual rescue.
