How long can it take for a baby's heartbeat to show on a sonogram?

I am not sure of the whole story as I am going through a waiting game myself right now. But my dh came home the other night and told me not to worry because a guy he works with said they couldn't find their baby's hb until 10 weeks. She is 8 months old now.
